Tutoring in SAMK

The student union SAMMAKKO is responsible for tutoring at Satakunta University of Applied Sciences. Student tutors act as peer tutors for students at the beginning and during their studies. SAMMAKKO recruits and trains all SAMK tutors with partners. A student who has the enthusiasm and the right attitude to act as a tutor can apply as a tutor. The next application period is 2.-16.10.2023.

Why apply as a tutor?

Acting as a tutor provides valuable experiences of peer mentoring of new students, as well as the opportunity to participate in various events. You can ask anything from the tutors about studies and student life. Tutors are experts in student life! Tutoring takes time, but you also get a lot of great experiences from tutoring! Depending on the activity, tutoring gives 1 to 5 credits. Credits are accumulated with the same hourly requirements as any other course.

Tutor

Tutor is one of the first people a new student will meet on campus. Tutors act as guides for the new student, especially during the early stages of their studies, and introduce students to the new learning environment, school practices, new hometown, and other students. As a tutor, you can work across fields of study, ie. you can also tutor a different degree program than the one you are studying.

E-tutor

Each tutor receives training and readiness to act as an e-tutor. E-tutoring is a low-threshold way for the student to contact the tutor. E-tutoring is a web-based service for all SAMK students.

Corresponding tutor

The corresponding tutor is there to monitor the activity of tutors and to support the tutors. The corresponding tutor therefore takes responsibility, divides the job roles and, if necessary, selects the volunteers. Usually, a person who already has previous experience in tutoring is the corresponding tutor.

International tutor

International tutors act as support for exchange students and English speaking degree program students coming to SAMK. Tutors help exchange students to settle in Finland, provide guidance on practical matters (such as official practices, housing, shopping in markets, etc.), advise and answer questions. International tutors keep in touch with the exchange students before they arrive in Finland. International tutors also organize various events where exchange students are introduced to Finnish culture.

International tutors guide English speaking degree program students. A large proportion of students entering foreign language degree programs come from abroad and need relatively different types of support. Foreigners entering foreign language degree programs need help with similar issues as exchange students; official practices, housing, shopping, etc. These things may seem obvious to Finns, but are often completely foreign to newcomers to the new culture.

Well-being tutor

Well-being tutors are students whose job it is to introduce other students to different forms, habits, and services of low-threshold movement and well-being. Well-being tutors share information about campus sports services and opportunities for sports activities and hobbies.

The well-being tutor acts as a mediator of various well-being events and services, and in addition to sports activities, it also organizes various events that promote the ability to study. The well-being tutor is also aware of the importance of sleep and recovery, for example. Well-being tutors work closely with CampusMoWe.
